The rights of those who compose musical works are protected by, among others, the GEMA (Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte). Each country has its own specialist licensing authority.
For every duplication, publishing or performance of a musical work belonging to a member of the GEMA or the presiding domestic society, the user is levied exploitation fees.
